Newton Free Library’s English Language Learner and Literacy Program is an intrinsic part of the Library’s mission of making us a true community center for lifelong learning for members of our diverse population. We are searching for a talented and motivated Literacy Coordinator to nurture our dynamic program which boasts 550 volunteer tutors helping over 650 adults learn English and become active members of the community.

The Coordinator is responsible for assessing new learners and pairing them with tutors, and must select and train volunteer tutors, including running seasonal new tutor training workshop series. The coordinator offers tutors ongoing support, learning and experience-sharing opportunities. Working closely with our network of volunteer teachers and tutors, the Coordinator maintains and publicizes a dynamic calendar of learner opportunities including one-on-one or small group instruction, drop-in conversation groups and thematic classes.

The successful candidate will possess a strong vision for fostering connection and learning through interactive opportunities and collections in a public library setting. Responsibilities will include staffing various library service desks, collection development for the literacy collection, and representing the library in various network and state organizations.
